Portable Propane Generators for Backup Power

Portable propane generators are popular generator choices of Americans to provide for their electrical needs when their primary fuel source fails. Aside from this type of generator, there are other types and models of generators available today.

An electrical generator is a device that can convert kinetic energy into electrical energy used to power appliances. This is a necessity especially during blackouts and in jobsite and worksite areas where there are no electrical sources. Electrical generators are basically categorized into two: Standby or stationary generators and portable generators. Standby generators are often used by businesses to prevent incurring losses from power outages. These are usually connected to the main electrical system and to a fuel line. These are often enclosed in aluminum and steel enclosures and have features that comply with prevailing emissions regulations. Portable generators, on the other hand, are less expensive models and are capable of supplying power for shorter periods of time. Because of their portability, they are often used to provide electricity in remote locations. Generally, these generators have built-in tanks and standard outlets that can be used with ordinary extension wires.

Standby generators and portable generators run on different types of fuel. Some models boast of tri-fuel or dual-fuel configurations that allow them to switch from natural gas or propane to gasoline just by using a hose. Given this aspect, a consumer should determine what type of fuel is available in his area before choosing a generator to purchase. Ordinarily, large generators use natural gas which is said to be more economical than other fuel types. Meanwhile, gasoline is used for most portable generators. Portable gasoline generators are the cheapest kind of generators but they run on limited time. These have to be refilled several times every day for them to continuously supply power. Some generators, both standby and portable, run on natural gas or propane. These generators do not need to be refilled frequently and usually have no run time limits. For some people, propane is the ideal fuel choice because of its unlimited shelf life which means that it can be stored for a long while without being used.

Various portable propane generators are available in the market today. When buying this kind of generator, make sure that it is capable of providing the amount of power that is needed. Moreover, other factors like noise level, wattage, and starting mechanism would have to be considered to ensure that they conform to the preferences of the consumer.
